What Is Raw Manga?

"Raw" manga simply means the original Japanese edition — the pages as published, before anyone has translated or lettered them into another language.

The term comes from scanlation communities, where a "raw" was the untouched scan that a group would work from. It has since drifted into general use among readers who follow a series in Japanese, whether or not any translation is involved.

Why read raws

Timing. Weekly series run in Japan first. Official translations follow, sometimes within days, sometimes much later, and some series are never licensed at all.

The original lettering. Translation is interpretation. Sound effects, dialect, verbal tics and honorifics all carry information that is hard to move into English without losing something. Readers studying Japanese often prefer to see what was actually written.

Availability. Plenty of series have no official English release. For those, the raw is the only edition there is.

Where to get them legally

  • Shueisha, Kodansha and Shogakukan digital storefronts. The publishers sell Japanese-language volumes directly. Some require a Japanese payment method.
  • MANGA Plus. Free simultaneous chapters for many Shueisha titles, in several languages including Japanese.
  • Kindle Japan, BOOK☆WALKER, and similar stores. A Japanese account is usually needed, but purchases are straightforward once set up.
  • Physical volumes. Import services ship tankōbon internationally.

Sites that aggregate scanned chapters without permission are a different matter. They are distributing someone else's work, and the people who made it see nothing from it. If you can buy the volume, buy the volume.

Reading raws you can't read yet

This is the gap most readers actually have: they have a legally purchased Japanese volume and cannot read enough of it to follow the story. Machine translation of individual pages is a reasonable aid here — good enough to follow dialogue, not good enough to replace a published translation.

That is the use case this tool is built for: you own the page, you want to know what it says, and you want to keep reading.
